I’m going to attempt to explain a couple things here to help out those that are having trouble putting out decent damage. There are a lot of things you need to look at when trying to figure out what’s going wrong.
Are you dying? Might be silly to ask but are you actually spending more time dead than alive? If you are then perhaps you need to realize a couple things.
The healer isn’t there for you; they are there for the tank. They will heal you “if” they can. So have health pots and bandages ready…step out of range and bandage yourself when you get low, if you are lucky you won’t have to cause the healer isn’t as occupied as they could be. If you’re pulling agro, STOP! Watch your threat meter, and slow down on dps so you don’t pull off the tank.
Is your spec optimal? Are you running the latest, greatest talent spec out there since the invention of the wheel? Do you know “How” to utilize this spec?
Most high end raid guilds have players that have been competing with some of the best on the server just to do 10 more dps than the guy next to them. This means they know exactly what to cast and when to cast it. Through the use of add-ons and trial and error they have mastered their class. What this means for you is you have to find how the spec works, and possibly spend some time on the test dummies finding the proper spell rotation to optimize your dps. As an example. If I am a mage that has no points in arcane or improved damage to any aoe…..why would I use aoe a lot? Why would I gimp my dps by using spells that are not enhanced by my talents on a regular basis? I shouldn’t, at least not often. At times it is beneficial, but 9 out of 10 times I am hindering the group’s progress more than enhancing. So…..practice your spec….learn how to use trinkets, potions, and food, to benefit yourself.
Are you in Bad gear? Are you a hunter with a lot of strength or spell power gear?
Man, I hope not. But it is possible that you could benefit from slightly different gear. You need to read the forums and find what the optimal attributes are for your class. A moonkin “can” benefit from spirit, but too much spirit and not enough intellect makes you lose too much damage (never running out of mana isn’t good unless you have the damage to take the trash out). A survival hunter “could” benefit from strength…are you spec’ed survival? Do you have threat enchant on gloves to tank instances? No? Then leave the shiny purple ring for the death knight or rogue.
My DPS dropped since last heroic, wth!!!!!
Who was in that heroic? Was there a shaman enhancing you with totems, pally with buffs, moonkin aura? Your base dps is what you have self buffed. No group buffs, no consumables. This is what you need to enhance. If you are low on dps take the kings buff over the wisdom or might over kings, if needed….change it on the boss fight if needed but if your dps is low then use the benefit of other means to raise it.
I can’t tell anyone how to play their spec; I just don’t have the on hand knowledge to do so. But I can look at posts on forums all over the internet and get an idea of how to play a specific spec. Now here’s the thing…If I don’t play that class and have a rudimentary understanding of how to up that classes dps...Then why can’t some not figure that out?
The only way you get better at this game is by understanding your class, understanding group mechanics and doing what you can to improve. Hope this helps people out. Just trying to throw some stuff out there that maybe they haven’t thought about before.
